French bass-baritone Cyril Rovery’s career brings together singing, theatre and the passing on of experience. Awarded the Marseille Conservatoire’s unanimous Gold Medal and the Grand Prix of the City of Marseille, he began his career in 1998, winning successive stages of the Voix Nouvelles competition at the Opéra d’Avignon and the Opéra de Paris.

His repertoire encompasses nearly sixty roles. Méphisto in Faust, Scarpia in Tosca, Zaccaria in Nabucco, the Marquis of Posa in Don Carlo and Escamillo in Carmen reflect his experience of Italian, French and Slavic opera. He approaches each character through the words, the score and the dramatic situation, bringing vocal expression, gesture and speech together. His roles also include Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Assur in Semiramide, the Podestà in La gazza ladra, Méphistophélès in La Damnation de Faust, Iago in Otello, Figaro and Count Almaviva in Les Noces de Figaro, and both Don Giovanni and Leporello in Don Giovanni.

His career has taken him to the Opéra de Marseille, the Romanian National Opera, Sofia National Opera, the opera houses of Varna and Stara Zagora, and the Warsaw Philharmonic. He has also performed in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Tokyo and Bucharest. He has shared the stage with Roberto Alagna, Béatrice Uria-Monzon, Patricia Ciofi, Leo Nucci, Vesselina Kasarova, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and John Tomlinson. Conductors and directors with whom he has worked include Michel Plasson, Yannis Kokkos and Klaus Michael Grüber.

As co-artistic director of Festiv’Opéra in Sausset-les-Pins with Barbara Bourdarel, he champions free public access to opera alongside demanding artistic standards. Summer 2026 brought two contrasting roles: Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’Élixir d’amour in July and the title role in Verdi’s Rigoletto in August. He also directed Rigoletto, drawing on the opera’s relationship with Victor Hugo’s drama. Comedy and tragedy thus shaped a season rooted in character and the encounter with an audience.

His recordings include Antoine Mariotte’s Salomé for Universal Music and the recital album Anges et Démons à l’Opéra for Adoopera Production. Both extend his exploration of the contrasting worlds of opera.

In Marseille, he also works as an allied-health voice rehabilitation practitioner at the CEEEV, Clinique Bonneveine, within the Fondation Hôpital Saint-Joseph. His work in voice and respiratory rehabilitation forms part of a multidisciplinary approach supporting professional voice users and patients. His experience as a singer informs his attention to breath, posture and speech.

A novelist, playwright and poet, he is the author of Jackie, JFK, Marilyn, Maria et les autres…, a novel shaped by history, music and personal memory, and of the play Faust. His poetry collection Canticum Aeternae Feminae – Le Chant de l’Éternel Féminin explores the many dimensions of the feminine. On the page, his writing continues the work begun on stage: giving a presence its voice and preserving what it conveys.
